Influenced by architecture and the urban environment, Zuzunaga create colorful & unique home fashion and accessories. The brainchild of Cristian Zuzunaga, the brand was founded in 2007 and has grown to produce an expansive collection of designs that are favored by style fans across the globe. To coincide with the new collection launching at Amara, The LuxPad takes a closer look at how it all began below…
Born in 1978 in Barcelona, Cristian Zuzunaga is the child of a Catalan mother and Peruvian father. This multicultural background instilled a strong sense of curiosity in young Cristian, and a desire to explore the world and one’s place within it. At the age of 17 he travelled and lived all over the world, finally settling in London where he has lived ever since.
Before establishing Zuzunaga, Cristian was busy doing many other things, that all led him to creating his signature style. From studying Biology to working as an international model, to then studying typo/graphic design at LCC and finally a MA at the Royal College of Art. It was at the RCA that he discovered printed textiles and digital technology which was a huge turning point in his career.
Studying Biology had instigated an urge in him to look for the details, for the unseen in everything. Color became crucial as he developed his work and concept. Once he began working with textiles he brought together all of his inspirations to create the signature style we see today.
Cristian came up with the concept that the Pixel is the ‘Icon of our Time’ when he was studying for his Masters degree at the Royal College of Art. After five years of working with squares, which entailed time spent in Shanghai in 2006, doing research for his dissertation on Globalization, new technologies and how these are altering how we perceive and navigate the world, both virtual and real. This lead to the combined inspirations behind Zuzunaga’s iconic style of pixel inspired designs in bold undulating colors in a mixed palette.
Also influenced heavily by Eastern and Western philosophy, alchemy, anthropology, sociology and psychology. Bringing these influences together had helped to shape the Zuzunaga style and keep it a popular home fashion brand. The cushion collection is inspired by the expression ‘Squaring the circle’, which means to do something that is seemingly impossible, like mass-producing unique objects. Zuzunaga cushions, which are made in collaboration with Kvadrat, uses the same initial design process as the Pixel collection. However, the resulting print has a large repeat pattern, meaning each cushion made is unique.
The latest collection, named Alchemy, focuses on the concept of changes and development and brings new designs to the range that have all been hand woven.
