Tom Dixon has become a name synonymous with cutting-edge interior style. His home accessory collections are continuously popular with the masses, and each new range brings a refreshing style reimagined for the home. Iridescence is the latest collection, launched at January’s Maison et Objet show, and is set to be seen throughout our homes in the coming year.
‘So easy to recognize but almost impossible to describe, this mysterious surface effect is familiar to anybody that has ever seen a few spots of petrol on a puddle in a garage forecourt or a giant soap bubble at a children’s party. In nature, it is resplendent on butterfly wings or peacock feathers, but in interiors it has been strangely overlooked as a finish for over a hundred years. Last popular in the early 1900’s, it was the finish of choice for the lustre ceramics and the exotic glass of the Belle Époque. We bring these extraordinary finishes back to life on a series of freeform vessels all made of black glass with our own oily iridescent hammered finish. A long overdue rethinking of this exotic surfacing material for the modern world.’ Tom Dixon.
The Iridescence collection is further split into ranges; Materialism Oil and Warp. Oil consists of the magnificent new range of home fragrances, all of which are presented in mysterious multi-colored vessels and feature a powerful & refreshing blast of woody essential oils. With melted edges and dented forms, no two containers are the same. The light refracting from the surface creates the lustrous effect of petrol on water or a dragonfly wing.
Warp brings together a mouth blown cylinder and semi-sphere, which are distorted, squashed and deformed whilst the glass is in a molten state. The mysterious iridescent finish is then applied by hand. Each artefact’s organic and irregular shape reflects and refracts light from the lustre glaze.
Tom Dixon is renowned for his extraordinary accessories, gifts and design objects formed from honest, resilient and heavyweight materials including copper, marble, cast iron, brass and wood. Informed by British heritage each piece is designed to be used or played with, to be treasured or to be given.
