The very first Philippe Starck hotel in Italy opened in 2009 in a historic 16th century Venetian building overlooking the famed Grand Canal. Next to Palazzo Grassi, the PalazzinaG is a blend of poetry, romanticism and tradition transformed by the creative mind of the multifaceted French Designer. Ushering in a new generation of the philosophy behind hospitality, PalazzinaG’s creator Emanuele Garosci shared Starck’s profound love for Venice and the floating city’s thousand-year-old culture, which became the leitmotif of the entire project.
Together Garosci and Starck set up a unique space to escape the hubbub of Venice in which tradition and experimentation come together in a dreamlike ambience to surprise guests and transport them to a city that is historic yet avant-garde. With personalised services and extraordinary interiors, the PalazzinaG’s traditional Venetian materials and decorations are juxtaposed with the most innovative examples of contemporary design.
Unassuming from the exterior, the three storey hotel boasts 2800m² of floor space with just sixteen luxury rooms and six suites. Alongside the accommodation sits an array of additional spaces for guests to enjoy including the celebrated PG’s Club Restaurant, a cicchetteria – the upscale Venetian version of a tapas bar, a bar filled with dramatic jewel-like tables and finally, a Krug Lounge – only the second of its kind in the world. These aspects of the hotel along with the exemplary design have led to numerous accolades for the hotel since its opening including appearing on Condè Nast’s Traveller Hot List and the It List’s Editor’s Choice Awards and it has also been named Best Business Hotel by both Fortune magazines and Wallpaper*. These prizes and the hotel’s ever-growing reputation for glittering evenings and social events has made PalazzinaG the ‘must-visit’ venue in Venice.
When Garosci’s decided to create an unprecedented hospitality project in this beloved city, Philippe Starck was the only designer he felt capable to create the venue he had dreamt of set in the lagoon landscape. An idea based on a unique vision, the concept was to create a space which allowed guests to feel temporarily and authentically Venetian – a far cry from the classical idea of lagoon tourism. With Starck stepping in to make the dream a reality, he also helped to develop a new concept of hospitality and a conciergerie aimed at offering a different experience for each stay.
Filled with a sense of charm and vitality, the PalazzinaG’s extraordinary rooms are highlighted by unique furnishings and accessories chosen by the designer. Rows of backlit mirrors and glass works by French artist Aristide Najean sit alongside priceless tomes, antique glassware and vintage pieces to give a truly unique feel. With two entrances, one off of the crowded Grand Canal and the other off the quieter Calle Grassi, there is no indication of the hotel from the outside apart from the stylised bulls’ heads again created by Aristide Najean who welcome guests instead. A vast selection of multicoloured motifs envelops whoever walks through the halls, with colours inspired by the most revered Venetian building materials reinterpreted by Starck including stucco, glass, marble, mahogany and colourful terrazzo apparent throughout.
The rooms and suites are soothing sanctuaries contrasting with the unexpected red, mauve and acid yellows of the corridors. Repeating the back-lit mirror theme found through the hotel, each room’s warm lighting, terrazzo flooring and bespoke furniture is a modern reinterpretation of classic Venetian design, with statement pieces dotted throughout every space. In the suite apartments, the beds are placed in the middle of the room overlooking the Grand Canal below for an extra-special stay in the beautiful city.
With head chef Matteo Panfilio at the helm, PalazzinaG offers an unforgettable culinary adventure to guests and visitors at PG’s Club Restaurant. Centring on a show kitchen facing the long restaurant table, guests can interact with the chefs and experience the best and most authentic tastes and pleasures of the lagoon. Continuing through the hotel guests will come to the second Krug Lounge in the world at the heart of the hotel. The luxury champagne bar offering tastings of the rarest vintage bottles, is accessible to members only (membership is offered strictly by invitation) and guests of the six suites and couples the finest fizz, special whiskies and cognacs with dishes created to optimally elevate the taste experience. A new summer addition to the PalazzinaG is the Krug Terrace for the most exclusive visitors to sip their favourite vintages amongst ornamental plants and parasols to escape the heat of the Venice sun.
Also including the GHouse – a three storey private five-star residence available for hire, the PalazzinaG is one of the finest examples of luxury hotel design in Europe. With a personalised ‘experience’ menu for guests to peruse including the ‘Culinary Experience’ and the ‘Winter High Tide Experience’, a stay at Philippe Starck and Emanuele Garosci’s masterpiece ensures a perfect trip and you can find more information on the top hotel on the PalazzinaG website.
