There’s no denying it, summer is a scorcher this year. It’s had us running out for paddling pools, fans and ice lollies just to get us through the sweltering days. Whilst this weather has us dreaming of the great outdoors, we still need to spend a large part our time inside. So how do you get summer style for the home? The LuxPad looks at how to make your interiors reflect the sunny world outside…
When it comes to shades of the summer, Mediterranean countries have got it right with white, white, white. Whilst darker colors are having their moment in the home, these shades will absorb the heat making the space feel warmer. However as you will know if you’ve ever spent time in Spain, Italy or Greece, white spaces reflect the light, keeping homes cool. Don’t panic if you already dared to go dark in your interior, you can make some simple changes to lift the rich tones. White bed linen, curtains or furniture in crisp white can go a long way to brightening the room and add a cooler summer vibe.
If you’ve already opted for pale walls, you’re all set to play with more summer hues to weave some vibrancy throughout your home. Take another leaf out of the Mediterranean’s book with a classic white and blue pairing. Or if you’re feeling particularly rebellious, choose a multicoloured palette this summer.
For the Love of Prints
Nothing says summer quite like an eye-catching print and this year’s popular patterns are to die for. Create a fiesta feel with multicolored stripes. Or bring the Moroccan riad home with geometric tile motifs. Whatever your pattern preference, summer is the time to be bold with it. Pattern could not be easier to add just for the season, think daring rugs, emblazoned cushions or an occasional chair upholstered in your favorite designs. For a subtle pattern pop choose one large scale design and a complementing small scale print to combine throughout the room. Alternatively if you want a powerful pattern punch, clash prints for a bold on-trend summer look.
Fur and velvet have been coveted materials for the home in recent years. And quite rightly so. But as the mercury rises, it’s time to put the cosy winter textures to one side and make some easy material swaps for the warmer months. Cotton and linen are key materials to utilize at this time of year to add cooling texture to the home, so swap that thick woolen throw for a light cotton bedspread or update your sofa with crisp linen cushions. Silk is another hero summer fabric thanks to its temperature regulating qualities and is therefore an excellent bed linen material in the heat.
We are firm advocates that no interior is every quite complete without home fragrance. From an uplifting zing in the bathroom to cozy, calming notes in snugs and bedrooms, fragrance has the power to create the atmosphere you are looking for in certain areas of the home. The seasons also play a large part in choosing the right scent for you home, and in summer light and revitalizing aromas can cut through the haze. Fresh, fruity or floral fragrances are all good choices for summer and with numerous options within these large scent categories you are certain to find the right one for you. Why not bring the holiday home and go for a luscious tropical scent? Or even a crisp sea side inspired fragrance?
