Located in the heart of west Amsterdam, Hotel Not Hotel is a unique destination far removed from the usual idea of a place to stay. A hotel at its heart, it is unlikely to resemble any space in which you’ve stayed before. Central to the hotel’s identity are the rooms with every one unique, from a crow’s nest to a genteel Spanish villa and the relaxed atmosphere which radiates from every space. Founded by Bruno Bont and Tijmen Receveur; Bruno’s experience lies in entrepreneurism where he has been a part of several businesses whilst Tijmen had a small taste of the hotel industry before they embarked on the adventure of building Hotel Not Hotel together.
Wanting to offer their visitors a different kind of base from which to explore the city, they envisioned a large living room where guests would feel at ease. The Hotel Not Hotel was to be a home that avoided monotonous rooms, lobbies and hallways, where at every turn there was something new to discover. Now brought to fruition, the Hotel Not Hotel is a place which wants you to feel at home with staff more like friends who can tell you all about the city surrounding you.
Enlisting the help of designers Collaboration-O and Dutch design rebel Arno Coenen at the beginning of the project, Bruno and Tijmen set about making their dream a reality and the team came up with a collection of unique cottages and rooms to form the main hub of the hotel. With the building originally set to become a Turkish bazar before plans fell through, the duo were able to take advantage of the structure’s high ceilings, classic brick arches and walls and the steel bridge running between the two sides of the top floor for the unusual creation. Since opening the space has quickly became a favorite amongst photographers, directors and other creative professions looking for an original setting to use for their own projects.
Whilst many rooms have communal bathroom facilities, the design of each sleeping space would appear to outweigh any inconvenience from sharing a bathroom. At Hotel Not Hotel the sleeping options include a restored tram car, a Spanish villa or even a selection of hidden bookcase rooms which appear out of nowhere in the library. Other curiosities include the Crisis Free Zone, a two room obelisk where you can truly get away from the hubbub of daily life surrounded by an intricately carved wooden fence, and printed houses adorned with colorfully clashing prints on the entire exterior.
Daring on the outside, once you step over the threshold into one of the rooms however you step into a hushed minimalist sanctuary. Based in an ever-growing neighborhood in west Amsterdam, with new bars, restaurants and cultural hotspots opening their doors every month, the best way to explore the area and city is apparently by bike with iconic Veloretti bikes available for hire at the hotel. Designed to encourage guests to interact, the building itself houses countless seating areas in which guests are encouraged to leave their rooms and join their neighbors, further adding to the friendly, family atmosphere of the hotel.
The final piece of the unique puzzle that is Hotel Not Hotel is the Keven Bacon bar. To most he is the famed laid-back actor and the heart of the Hollywood Six Degrees of Separation game, but to Hotel Not Hotel, the name is synonymous with fresh coffee over breakfast or a cocktail in the evening. The quirky Kevin Bacon bar is always ready to serve whoever walks through the door. From businessmen to stylists, the bar attracts an eclectic crowd much like the hotel itself and is a must-stop destination when visiting the Venice of the North.
