Originating in 1955, Broste Copenhagen is one of Scandinavia’s leading interior brands. Similar to many Scandinavian entities like the ever popular hygge or the lesser known lagom which are not only cultural movements but also states of being, Broste Copenhagen is more than just interior design, it is a way of life that they are eager to share with the world. Creating products to reach a wide audience, they hold a long tradition of traveling the world for inspiration and materials to form their Nordic decor look. The LuxPad explores Broste Copenhagen’s history, values and key Nordic signature pieces…
Created by Ulf Brøste, the son of a successful Copenhagen salt merchant, the company stemmed from a small idea which had huge potential. At the time Danish furniture design was led by iconic designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Børge Mogensen and Finn Juhl, who as exceptional artists and craftsmen received a surge of media attention. Their designs however were difficult to manufacture and distribute them in quantities that would become a lucrative business. With this in mind, Brøste assembled a group of the greatest talents of the time and systematized manufacturing and export to bring the sought-after designs to everyone.
The business flourished in the years to come with numerous stores opening in Copenhagen. Playing an important role in creative circles of the era, Brøste’s passion for art and design along with the successful business he created helped raise awareness of Danish craftsmen and their unique form and style. The Broste Copenhagen passion for good design and love of the Nordic touch continues to live on in every product the brand produces today, just as it always has.
The Nordic region is a vast and varied landscape which is windswept and biting in winter and fresh and accommodating in summer, with the sweet fragrance of roadside flowers merging with earthy summer rain. Inspired by their surroundings, Broste Copenhagen use endless natural elements to fuel their designs, from the north wind drawing patterns in the sand to the imprints raindrops leave on withered leaves. These patterns are then transformed onto tableware, fabric or woven into textiles to create exceptional Nordic decor.
With a love of rustic characteristics, natural materials and everything the hands can enjoy as much as the eyes, the Nordic signature style can be witnessed across the entire collection from home accessories to furniture. The Nordic tableware collection captures the very essence of the Broste Copenhagen brand. The first iteration, Nordic Sea, with its undulating hand painted stripes to mimic the waves of the ocean in grey, green and blue rightfully earned its place in gourmet restaurants and home around world since its launch in 2009. The collection has since been added to with the brighter Nordic Sand version and the dark and dramatic Nordic Coal, with each new line representing key areas of the Nordic landscape.
The brand’s Nordic signature style also had a strong affinity with natural materials such as rattan and bamboo which can be seen across many of their furniture and home accessories. Sharing the same rustic minimalism that is so iconic of Nordic design, these pieces’ materials are found from further afield with the durable rattan vines for example sourced from Southeast Asia. Environmentally friendly and supporting the local communities the materials are sourced from, these elements add a further natural elegance to the Broste Copenhagen range.
