A retrospective of Missoni’s signature combination of fashion, art and color is being held from April 19th to 8th November 2015 at the MA*GA, Museo d’Arte Contemporanea of Gallarate, Varese, Italy. Celebrating the dialogue between the family run brand and twentieth-century art, this exhibition is set to explore the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of the iconic Italian fashion house.
Delving deep into their rich history, the exhibition will provide an insightful glimpse into one of the world’s most iconic brands. It is an exhibition all about roots; the re-telling of a family-run business which started in a small basement in Gallarate, near Milan, where Missoni first opened in 1953.
The success and international recognition won by Missoni in the fields of textile design and fashion stand as one of the most accredited voices of the Made in Italy label. Renowned across the globe in fashion, home and accessories, the brand’s capacity for generating conversations and connections with the greatest modern and contemporary artists knows no bounds.
Spaces within the exhibition will be designed as works of art, and it will be organiszed into different narrative sections that outline the main characteristics of the brilliance of the Missoni brand, made up of color, material and shape. It will aim to demonstrate the extremely close tie between their creativity and art, a characteristic that makes the brand all but unique in the world of international fashion.
Set to open with Fashion House, a video installation by the artist Ali Kazma that interprets the work of the ‘Missoni House’. Entering their world, the Turkish artist focuses on the approach used by the Missonis for the company’s entire production cycle, emphasising the happy marriage between artisan knowledge and the search for the most advanced design.
It will then shift to an analysis of the cultural roots that influenced the Missonis choices in terms of design, color, pattern and shape, intrinsic features of their style. This section focuses on abstract and aniconic European art from the first half of the twentieth century, presenting works by Ottavio Missoni himself, Giacomo Balla, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Fortuanto Depero and many more renowned names from the art industry.
Missoni, l’arte, il colore will chart the brand’s meteoric rise to fashion powerhouse, tracking the references and influences which have come to define it as one of the most artistically charged brands on the global scene. The exhibition will perfectly convey the brand’s core values, and the dualism that underpins the Missoni philosophy: craft, quality and authenticity effortlessly married with innovation, fantasy and creativity.
Curated by Luciano Caramel and Emma Zanella, the exhibition is the fruit of joint collaboration between the City of Gallarate, the Museo MA*GA and the Missoni Archive, with contributions and support from the Region of Lombardy – Office of Culture, Identity and Self-Governance, the Province of Varese and the Chamber of Commerce of Varese, and the participation of the Gallerie d’Italia – Piazza Scala (Milan).
