Here they share with The LuxPad one of their recent projects, a luxury coastal home in Newport Beach, California…
Project Name: Ocean Contemporary
Floor Area: 3,200 SF (a three-story house)
Project Time Taken: one year construction
Completion of Project: Summer 2016
This home is located on the desirable Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California just steps away from the famous surfing and bodyboarding spot known as the Wedge. It was designed and built as a specification home, therefore the overall aesthetic needed to appeal to the majority and demographic of the area. Being in an affluent beach community, the details were very important, like the stunning walnut back-lit slatted ceiling in the entry, lighting selections, custom cabinetry, luxury stone and tile surrounds and beautiful hardwood flooring.
Creation / planning process
The design process of this home was unique because the end goal was a contemporary design, yet we knew we wanted it to also have a casual sense about it that spoke to the beach location. The home was also sold before being completed, therefore the buyer was able to work directly with Sérendipité to change a few of the original specifications to make the home more suitable to their personal taste.
How it went?
In the past Sérendipité has designed many coastal homes with this builder, Shoreline Development, but most of them had a classic or traditional feel. This home was different because the builder knew he wanted a coastal contemporary design. Sérendipité loves stepping outside the box and creating unique, fun designs. Valerie always says, “the style and design of a home is not about me, it is about my client, and it’s their journey.”
Favorite room / part of the project and why?
Valerie’s favorite room in this home is the kitchen, which is in the great room (entry, family room & kitchen). Valerie is an avid cook and designs every home she works on around a well-designed, purposeful kitchen. She believes the kitchen is the heart of the home and a place for congregation. She loves the warmth of the walnut accents against the clean, white cabinetry, marble backsplash and Sea Pearl slab material.
Any issues / problems you had to overcome during the project?
Being that this home is located at the beach, space limitations and a long, narrow lot were difficulties to overcome. Keeping the walls light and bright were important for a long narrow lot with limited sunlight entering from the sides of the home.
