La Maison By Dussol is in the prime position to enjoy this year’s biggest sporting event yet secluded enough to still offer a paradise retreat. Nestled in the heights of Rio de Janeiro in the luxurious Gávea residential area, the hotel is just ten minutes from Ipanema and and Leblon, two of Brazil’s most prosperous neighbourhoods. With just five rooms, each inspired by five different places across the world, La Maison is the perfect base to explore the captivating Brazilian city which will host the 2016 Olympics in just four months’ time.
Pioneers in the hospitality industry, François-Xavier and Jacques Dussol brought the boutique hotel concept to Brazil with the opening of La Maison, the first of its kind in the city, and in turn revolutionized the small luxury hotel industry in the area and transformed hospitality into an art. The brothers specialize in providing their guests with a unique experience combining luxury and finesse with privacy and La Maison is a testament to the By Dussol’s signature style.
A haven from the frenzied city below, La Maison is perched amongst the trees of the Tijuca Forest and features a flamboyant Bohemian style reimagined for the 21st century. The hotel is a combination of different elements including designer furniture and vintage/antique finds sourced from Rio de Janeiro. The two lounges are both open and airy allowing the Brazilian sunshine to stream through the open façades and floor-to-ceiling glass doors, whilst outside there is crystal clear swimming pool and sundeck with views out over the lush jungle canopy.
The five individually designed suites are inspired by five very different points of the globe with three offering spectacular views of the Tijuca Forest and Christ the Redeemer atop the peak of Corcovado mountain. Each suite has been imbued with its own unique personality to wow visitors and to add another dimension to their stay.
Ganesha takes inspiration from the Maharajas of India and is the most ornate of the five rooms. Green wallpaper striped with gold provides the bold base of the room contrasted with a blush pink hue under the woven wooden lattice divide. Touches of hot pink finish the room’s decor and the matching pink bathroom filled with green mosaic adds further drama to the space. Named after the Hindu god of knowledge and intellect, the sensuous suite also offers a private patio to transport guests back to the delights of Brazil when stepping outside.
Harking back to the China of Marco Polo’s era, the Shangai suite is an atmospheric creation recalling the spirit of ancient wisdom and secrets of the Forbidden City of the Qing dynasty. With a private terrace with a hammock and forest view, the Shangai is in stark contrast to the tropical scenery outside with inky charcoals and lacquered reds. Key elements of the room are the red and gold headboard depicting an ancient Chinese symbol and the red lacquered bathroom complete with sunken bathtub.
The Récamier suite’s inspiration hails from the other side of the globe depicting Paris in the 18th century. A showcase of classic Directoire style, the soft blue and white create a calming environment in which to escape the colorful city outside. Reminiscent of historic literary salons, it offers the splendours of the Palais Royal and the Tuileries gardens and the suite also boasts a private terrace with forest and Christ the Redeemer views.
A Brazilian themed suite from the past, the Copacabana represents the district of the same name during the ‘30s and ‘40s. A bold monochrome design, the strong black and white stripes of the wallpaper is reminiscent of Copacabana’s famous boardwalk the Calçada. A sophisticated addition to La Maison’s suite collection, it offers bold lines and distinguished style for the most discerning of guests and it also offers the coveted view of the Tijuca Forest.
A Manhattan themed suite, Tiffany is inspired by the famous jeweller’s packaging with straight, modern lines. With accents and the entire bathroom in the iconic Tiffany blue, the shower opens straight onto the terrace outside to take in the spectacular scenery whilst getting ready for the day ahead and the terrace is also the perfect spot to enjoy fabulous views of the area whilst the sun goes down.
