Top Interior designer Inge Moore and her London-based Muza Lab design team including Caitlin Miller and Nathan Hutchins were appointed to completely reimagine Sun Resort’s Kanuhura Maldives retreat in 2017. Tasked with redesigning every area of the hotel and introducing new spaces, Muza Lab have been in charge of every detail of the new design from creating larger guest rooms, to designing crockery and new staff uniforms. The LuxPad dives into Kanuhura’s new design…
Aiming to create a truly different destination for this part of the world, the team drew on their gyp-set lifestyle philosophy to create the overall feel of the resort. The lifestyle combines the unconventionality of the gypsy fused with the sophistication and speed of jet setters. At once free spirited and impeccably stylish, gyp-setters have an intuitive understanding of modern sophistication and international tastes and want to be emotionally and creatively connected with wherever they land. With this lifestyle as a guide, Muza Lab has transformed Kanuhura into a place full of bohemian spirit which is unconventional, chic and enviably laid-back.
‘We found inspiration in the legends, culture and natural world of the islands – their stories, colors and sculptural forms,’ explains Inge. ‘By bringing these influences into the experience of Kanuhura, we have created a sense of free-spirited timelessness and wellbeing where guests can escape from their normal lives and find a place to create their own special memories with family and friends.’
The Kanuhura experience greets guests as soon as they land at the holiday destination’s main international airport at Malé, the capital of the Maldives. Before they board the sea plane that will usher them to the exclusive atoll, guests can enjoy a private lounge to unwind in with a cocktail on the white and black striped sofas which mirror the hotel’s main lounge. On arrival at the atoll the Boduberu lounge is ready and waiting with welcome drinks and features a monochromatic theme inspired by the black and white sarongs of the local Boduberu performers who showcase tales of heroism, satire and romance.
Located on a jetty over the crystal clear water, the lounge is filled with organic forms, natural materials and playful elements with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. Updating the original structure which was made of dark wood, Muza Lab chose to transform the timber instead of removing it by lime washing the beams and removing the walls to replace them with rope handrails. Black and white upholstery, oversized wicker chairs and feature lights reminiscent of jelly fish fill the space and the staff’s uniforms celebrate the sarongs of the Boduberu with laid-back monochromatic pieces.
The heart of the Kanuhura resort is the lawn area which acts as a social hub. Here you can get all your basics from easy eats to pampering sessions. The cluster of buildings that surround the lawn include a coffee and ice cream deli, a beauty salon with private bridal suite, a playroom for both adults and teens and a boutique. Each space has been decorated to reflect the spaces’ use from the gelato tones of the deli, to the soothing mint and white of the salon.
Muza Lab’s unique style has transformed the resort’s bedrooms and suites into tranquil paradise escapes and the most luxurious of these are the Palm Houses and Shell Houses. The Palm Houses have bedrooms on the beach overlooking the ocean and offer a color palette inspired by palm trees. The Shell Houses offer even more luxury and are raised over the water. Similar in interior details to the Palm Houses but with added space, they also offer outdoor courtyards with feature baths to relax under the stars, large terraces and comfy nets to recline over the sea.
Along with the many luxury amenities available at Kanuhura, there are also multiple dining and drinking options throughout the property. From A Mano with its local, free range produce and a design which embraces the natural to Bottega, a vivacious Italian restaurant and wine bar, you will be sumptuously fed at every turn. The restaurants are accompanied by a selection of bars to enjoy your favourite cocktails on the beach and include the 360° view Cowry Bar which picks up the colors of the shell of the same name and the swing-seated Iru Beach Lounge.
