Native Union’s innovative accessories are a luxurious take on the technological world. Using the finest elements for each of their mobile accessories they remain true to their three main principles of user experience, innovation through materials and attention to detail at every turn. Native Union’s award winning design team is headed up by Fabien Nauroy, he talks to The LuxPad about how they stay ahead in the industry and the creative design process behind each product…
What inspired Native Union to put their own stamp on the mobile accessories market?
Everything started from a shared passion for good design and well-made products. Disenchanted by the nondescript, mass produced plastic that filled the mobile accessories market, we set out to offer a stylish alternative for the modern individual.
Can you tell us what sets Native Union items apart from the rest?
We strive to create products with personality that enhance the way we live with our tech. Combining the best materials with small but thoughtful details that make a better user experience.
What mobile/technological accessories can you yourselves not live without?
Our iPhones and Macbooks. We can’t live offline for more than 2hours!
You have your own in-house design team, can you tell us about them?
We pride ourselves on designing everything in-house. I head up a very talented team and together we have won numerous design awards. We try to stay true to our core values, focusing on user experience, innovation through materials, and attention to detail. I also spend a lot of time looking to other industries, like furniture or footwear, for inspiration.
Can you talk us through the Native Union design process – from inception to the finished product?
It always starts with user scenario, studying how people use their tech, trying to identify everyday small frustrations. We brainstorm on solutions, things we could do better to improve the experience. But more than just functional we believe our product should always express something about us as individuals. We work on materials and start sketching, trying to keep the simplest form following function. This obsession to keep only the essential is really part of the Native Union design language now. Clean and geometric lines make our products more approachable, intuitive and desirable.
With constant advances in technology happening all the time, how do you ensure your brand stays ahead when creating new products?
The product lifetime is short in our industry but it’s not necessarily negative, it forces us to keep reinventing ourselves with new ideas and new solutions. Any new devices or new technologies arriving on the market are actually new opportunities for us.
What will be the next accessories to get the Native Union treatment?
We will soon launch a range of accessories for Apple Watch. We are especially excited by the luxury tech version which will launch in October to complete our Marble range.
Your products incorporate a range of premium materials not found in other technological accessories, how do you choose the materials for your products?
Our design team is very active online checking design blogs, following the work of designers from various fields such as fashion or home decoration. They also travel to design shows every year trying to anticipate new trends we could bring to our industry.
Can you describe Native Union’s signature style?
Minimal, intuitive, with an attention to detail and materials.
Do you have a favourite Native Union piece?
The Night Cable, a 3m charging cord designed for your night stand. Long enough to let you use your device freely while charging, it features a nautical inspired knot which looks great and prevents the cable from dropping to the floor.
The luxurious and innovative Native Union accessory collection is available at Amara to update your technology with the brand’s unique signature style.
