With a textile heritage and background in fine art, Elizabeth Elsey has always been driven by her enduring love of soft textiles. Inspired by calming color palettes, interiors and her childhood summers spent escaping the city in the South of France, each product transports the user to a softer more colorful world.
How did the collaboration with Amara to fruition? What has been your favorite part of the project?
With Christmas on the horizon, Amara and I decided to team up to make a special collection for many wish lists! My favorite part was designing the bumble bee and bringing it to life against a dusky pink and charcoal grey base.
How was this different from creating your other designs?
This is the first time we have made a bespoke Wellness Collection and it includes our very first hot water bottles, along with eye masks and travel pouches in this exclusive bee pattern.
What is your favorite piece from the collection?
I love wearing the eye mask on my travels but I am also totally head over heels for the embroidered hot water bottle. I’ve been using it in my office to feel cozy as the weather turns Autumnal.
What is a typical working day like for you?
My working day begins between 8.30-9am with a coffee and my laptop! If I’m lucky, I will fit in a work out before I start or try and fit one in at lunchtime. I’m always switched on and my mind is constantly thinking of new ideas so I use exercise to switch off. The structure of my days varies but I try to focus on emails in the morning and clear my inbox before multi-tasking for the rest of the day; juggling designing, press, marketing, sales and liaising with my customers! It’s always a busy day when you’re building a start-up, but never boring!
What is the best advice any one has ever given you?
“First, think. Second, believe. Third, dream. And finally, dare” – Walt Disney.
How would you describe your own interior style and what is your favorite room in your house and why?
Simple, calm, relaxed, laid back with authentic pieces. My favorite room is the bedroom because I love sleeping and recharging. That’s why I love designing bedding so much. The best bedroom would be cool, soft and clutter free… cloudy soft sheets, cushions and pillows, just a lamp for late night reading and a friendly green plant to greet me in the morning. Perfect!
Growing up did you always know you wanted to work in the design industry?
Yes, but the design industry always seemed so glamorous and out of reach. I’ve now realised that as long as you’re true to your art, it isn’t at all. Growing up, I loved reading interior magazines and making mood boards in my sketchbooks with images and textiles that inspired me. I always dreamed of doing something creative, but wasn’t sure how to go about getting there… so I love that my path has lead me to developing my homeware brand.
What was the hardest lesson you learnt from creating your own brand?
Learning how to switch off and relax. It’s very easy to become addicted to working when every day is exciting and you’re making visible progress. I feel like my head’s in the clouds a lot of the time, but excitement can be just as exhausting as stress. It’s hard to stay calm and I’m always trying to find ways to wind down.
What does the rest of 2018 hold for you?
We can’t wait to launch our AW18 Collection, for all artists-at-heart! ‘The Artist Life’ is an ode to the magic and romance inside an artist’s mind. The new designs are much adored symbols of nature and animals in keeping with our current collections. We will also be working with the Local Ocean Charity, to continue to raise funds to protect and nurture our natural environment and the animals within it.
