The owners of this grand Art Deco inspired property brought Sydney based interior designer Greg Natale in for their home redesign after their original architect sadly passed away early on in the design process. Taking over the entire project Greg and his team worked closely alongside the owners to create the family’s forever home which would see them through many happy years. The LuxPad takes a look at the home’s extensive redesign…
Situated on a delicately sloping hill site, the house is located on the border of Bellevue Hill and Rose Bay, a particularly picturesque area of Sydney with tree lined streets and homes dating back to the 19th century alongside new builds. The family have one teenage son and two younger daughters and had owned the block and the original house for some time before they were ready to transform the space into their forever home. With a young family they had no intention of moving any time soon, which meant they were looking for a home that was classical with proportions and spaces that gave them room to grow, entertain and celebrate with extended family.
They liked pattern and were keen for texture and layers to be added throughout the home, however white was also added as a key theme to keep the design understated. The white has been used to enhance the crisp detailing of the scheme both inside and out. Working as both architect and interior designer, Greg Natale extensively reworked the structure of the house by introducing a lower basement level to house a wine cellar, cinema and guest suites. To connect all levels of the home, they also introduced a ribbon reminiscent circular stair to rise through all three floors and they also removed the pitched roof to accentuate the Art Deco inspired façade.
The fresh white used throughout was broken up with grey and blue, with the one truly loud design statement the brilliant blue front door. Greg felt the door could afford to be bold thanks to the surrounding white and it gives way to an elegant entry hall with hints of blue carried through in the custom rug. Art also played a large role in the home’s design, with the owners sourcing pieces from South Africa and others sourced together with Greg’s team.
Along with the bright front door, there are many other unique pieces throughout the home as the firm custom designs all joinery and metal work for their projects. Keeping to the Art Deco inspired design, the joinery and metal balustrades echo the curves of the main house and offer a beautiful cohesiveness throughout. The spiral staircase also creates a sense of movement through the home and allows the rest of the home to be flooded with natural light from above to create airy feel throughout.
Built for entertaining, the design had to take into account the owners’ love of hosting and their active social lives. The extra rooms added like the cinema, games room and outdoor pool were all included in the design to enhance the family’s entertainment opportunities which would appeal to every family member. The pool and outdoor areas were also placed in close proximity to the kitchens to ensure that entertaining in the summer months would be a breeze.
