Simply translating to ‘Scandinavian’ in all three of the Scandinavian languages (Danish, Norwegian and Swedish), Scandinavisk is the perfect name for the brand aiming to bring to life the stories of the vast northern European landscape. With every fragrance dedicated to a particular element of the area’s culture and environment, Skandinavisk’s candles and diffusers are able to literally bottle the scents of Scandinavia and share the beauty of the vast, varied and often mystical region with the rest of the world.
Home of the earth’s happiest people according to numerous polls, Skandinavisk founders Shaun and Gerry discovered the delights of the area when they found love with two Scandinavian girls fifteen years ago and never left. Swapping the corporate hubbub of two American multinationals for the laidback Scandinavian lifestyle, they split their time between Copenhagen and Stockholm and immersed themselves in the culture around them. Focusing on life’s small moments, prioritising family over careers, cycling to the office and leaving at 4pm, the raw nature and endless summers are all part of the Scandinavian lifestyle. After developing a keen appreciation for these customs, Shaun and Gerry made the decision to create a brand which both captured and shared the traditions which to natives of the countries is just part of daily living.
Believing that the essence of this enviable lifestyle is displayed nowhere better than in the flickering flame of a candle, this was the natural vessel for Shaun & Gerry’s dream and forms the basis of the brand. Scandinavian people burn more candles than any other nation in the world and they use them morning, noon and night for twelve months a year. Knowing that a candle makes any moment softer, more informal and cosier, they believe the glow of candlelight nourishes the soul as it burns through the wax. This worthy concept has become Skandinavisk’s mission to share with the wider world.
The brand launched with three fragrances which perfectly encapsulate the Scandinavian region: Skog, Hav and Hygge. With the vast quantities of the region’s land covered by Boreal forest, Skog (Forest in Swedish) is a huge part of the landscape and an emblem of Scandinavian living. With notes of spruce, pine and fir, Skog transports the mind to the dense forest spanning over half of Scandinavia from far south to the Arctic Circle. Surrounded by three seas, the North Atlantic, Baltic and the Arctic, the Scandinavian countries boast some of the world’s longest coastlines and Hav translates to ‘sea’ in Nordic. Scandinavian people are never far from the sea so the sights and smells of the water are part of the essence of the nation and the water flora, driftwood, sea froth and fresh air notes perfectly capture this.
Hygge is not just a saying in Scandinavia, it is a way of life to be created and repeat at numerous times throughout the day. There is no direct English translation for the word and it is often described as a state of being rather than a feeling. A term which runs through every aspect of Scandinavian’s lives, it is the art of creating intimacy, fellowship and cosiness in any moment and it is thought that nothing is more hygge than the flickering glow of candlelight. With Scandinavian countries burning more candles than any other region, Scandinavisk’s Hygge fragrance is particularly poignant in both scent and significance with essence of tea, baked strawberry cake, wild mint and rose petals.
These three core fragrances made way for more scents encompassing the Scandinavian way of life with candles representing many aspects from Ro (tranquillity) and Koto (cosiness at home) as natural progressions to the hygge concept and Snö and Fjord to further represent the rugged and harsh yet breathtakingly beautiful terrain and seasons.
