In the interior industry September heralds the coming of the New Year. It’s the time we start to look to the future, look back on what we’ve learnt so far and it’s now the big names in interiors start to make their predictions for the year ahead. The first big announcement of the season we all wait for is the coveted Dulux Color of the Year. Each year the color experts assemble a panel of color designers, design specialists, trend forecasters, architects and editors from around the world at the global ColourFutures™ event. Here they discuss what we need from the spaces around us, capture a universal theme and finally suggest the one color which embodies the mood of the moment and the year ahead. Without further ado, the Dulux Color of the Year 2019 is, drumroll please…Spiced Honey.
The wonderfully warming shade is just what we need after an unsettling and unpredictable year. After being overwhelmed with the deluge of news, choices and demands upon our time, the panel felt this had caused us all to close up and retreat into the spaces we feel safe and cocooned. It was a time to press pause and regroup. Now moving forward into 2019, the panel foresee a re-energized time where unpredictability is met with positive action, optimism and purpose. The upheaval of this year is leading to a 2019 focused on reawakening with a sense of ‘letting the light in’.
The warming, inviting amber tones of Spiced Honey perfectly capture this cocooned awakening. Heleen van Gent, the head of the Global Aesthetic Center who chairs the ColourFutures™ panel, describes the color as being ‘both calming and nourishing or stimulating and energizing, depending on the palettes and light surrounding it’. She says ‘the contemporary hue is versatile, sophisticated and timeless and lends itself to a broad spectrum of life and interior styles – perfect for reflecting the universal mood encapsulated by the panel’.
‘Every year, we seek to transform a trend into a color that responds to consumer needs and enables them to bring a mood, affecting their life, in to their homes. In 2019, as a society, we want to reach out, engage with our communities, make things better and ‘be the change’ – anything from supporting charities to small acts of neighborly kindness. It’s time to act and Spiced Honey enables transformation inspiring a positive, emotional change.’ Heleen van Gent
The raw, natural quality of Spiced Honey helps it to work as a warm neutral, with Marianne Shillingford, creative director of Dulux UK, explaining that its these neutral elements which make it adaptable when ‘pairing with different materials and styles of decoration. Its rich caramel tones visually turn up the thermostat a few degrees and so it’s perfect for creating a relaxed cozy atmosphere in places where we like to think, dream, love and act.’
Perfect for pairing with white and off whites to allow it to shine in its own right, it is also at home combined with countless other shades. To show this the panel have created a set of four color palettes each containing Spiced Honey and inspired by the varied tones of the shade. Marianna explains the color palettes tell different stories of color and the way we will be using it in our homes in the year ahead. ‘Think, Dream, Love and Act are the trends that capture a new spirit of resilience and optimism in a world that had us retreating to our homes and hiding behind the sofa in 2018.’
The Think palette is an inviting mix of neutrals, soft pinks, intense burgundy and regal dark blue. Combined with polished woods, mid-century furniture and graphic prints, it is a smart, sophisticated look. Dream is a romantic palette filled with powder pinks and blues to create serene calmness in the home. Soft fabrics, pale woods and simple handmade vessels add to the contemplative feel of this space.
Love captures the intensity of the emotion and is the warmest of the palettes. Filled with richly pigmented shades like forest green, teal and terracotta, it works well with wooden floors and botanical prints. Act is the most playful palette with pops of vivid red and green combined with crisp white, grey and pale pinks and blues. It is brought to life with reclaimed, personalized furniture and bold graphic shapes.
