What is your favorite thing about Christmas time and why?
We love everything about Christmas! We always take a proper break and really enjoy spending lots of time with our children, family and friends.
Tell us a little about where you live – does your community do anything particularly festive that you get involved with?
We live in a beautiful town called Ledbury, we love to get involved in the community celebrations including the switching on of the lights, Christmas markets etc. and we open our studios with fellow designers and makers for two weekends in the run up to Christmas offering lots of handmade gifts. We particularly enjoy walking up the cobbled alley to the wonderful Christmas carol concert at St Michael’s church and then for a pint in the Prince of Wales afterwards.
How do you celebrate the festive period?
We like to get into the festive spirit as soon as possible by going to Christmas Markets, buying and decorating the biggest tree we can on the first of December, taking the children to see a pantomime and a ballet, meeting up with lots of friends for pre-Christmas drinks and dinners before things get too hectic and then spending a magical week or so with family in Cornwall. On Christmas morning, the children will open their stockings on our bed and then we’ll have a big breakfast before we open the presents under the tree. We’ll go for some fresh air and a pint before returning to the house for a feast.
What is your favorite type of decoration and why, and what can’t you stand?
The more the better in our house, lots of color and fairy lights with endless paperchains, hanging paper globes, flowers, mistletoe, and ivy garlands.
When it comes to festive food what is your favorite dish and what would you rather live without?
Luckily we all love cooking so we eat very well over the Christmas period, I love the full roast turkey lunch but also the excuse to enjoy lots of cheese, crackers and booze! I’m not overly keen on Christmas pudding but I’ll always have a slice in the name of tradition.
What are you hoping Santa brings you this year?
I’m hoping for a new pair of running trainers but really, we have everything we need and want, I’m mostly looking forward to spending time with everyone I love.
What is the best Christmas present you have ever had?
Emma agreed to marry me on Christmas morning 2007- that was certainly the best Christmas present I’ve had!
What are your top three tips for keeping your home stylish at Christmas?
I don’t think that our house at Christmas could be described as stylish, it’s a bit over the top but I think you should fill the house with all of the things you love at this time of year and for us that’s plenty of color!
Do you craft anything yourself at Christmas?
Everyone is getting something we have made (sorry!), we’ve enjoyed making bags, cushions, wash bags and purses in specially selected patterns and colors for each person. We give a lot of homemade food and liqueurs and the children love to make gifts too. And of course, the cards and wrapping paper are all screen printed!
How and where would you spend your dream Christmas?
We’re very lucky to spend Christmas in our dream way- in an incredible house with our wonderful family in Cornwall; lots of bracing walks on the beach and then relaxing in front of the open fire with too much food and booze. This year will be particularly special as my brother and his wife had a daughter in March so there will now be 3 beautiful children to enjoy Christmas with- we can’t wait!
What is your favorite Christmas song and or film?
We love listening to cheesy Christmas songs as well as traditional carols all through December, I don’t think I could choose a favorite! But favorite Christmas film is easy- we all love Home Alone!
Are you an organised Christmas shopper – or do you leave everything to the last minute?
Luckily Emma is very organised, I used to be very last minute but I’m getting better and commissioned Emma’s present months ago; our very talented goldsmith friend Shivani Patel has designed a beautiful ring which I can’t wait to give.
