Luxury and craftsmanship are words that get banded around a little too easily these days. With the luxury goods market perpetually increasing in popularity and breadth sometimes it isn’t always easy to tell why some products cost what they do. Cedes Milano, a traditional Italian manufacturing house have truly mastered the art of craftsmanship and luxury materials, with an envious catalogue of beautiful products for the home. The LuxPad decided to take a closer look at this brand and find out exactly how they make their pieces and what goes into the craftsmanship of each piece…
A small craft company at heart, Cedes Milano was established in 2009 by Manuela Casati and later expanded in 2013 with the help of her life partner Mauro Lorenzi. Both bringing different expertise to the company, they had acquired remarkable know-how through years in their own family businesses. They came together over a shared appreciation of the importance of preserving craftsmanship and decided to establish a company entirely dedicated to manufacturing natural products.
One of the driving forces of their brand philosophy is the importance of the people who work for them. With that comes the integral value of a high quality working environment and equipment. The company facilities are located in Milan, in the Navigli historical area which formerly hosted the Richard Ginori manufacturing plant, which has been turned recently into a multipurpose arts and crafts centre. An additional space, dedicated to the leather manufacturer, is situated close to the main facility. Cedes Milano believe that a calm and spacious environment enhances the creativity of the craftspeople who work for them, turning raw material into high quality products.
In each and every product from Cedes Milano very complex materials are used, and these require experience and care to be manufactured. The surface of a horn, a piece of bamboo or a detail made of exotic wood are very changeable elements, and their structure can change according to the temperature and the humidity level of the environment. It takes years of practice to build confidence and skills, and the manufacturing process has to be carried out with the utmost care.
Cedes Milano aim to create long-lasting products, that stand the test of time, objects to love, maintain and preserve, as a tribute to those who created them first and then to those who bought them. The creation of every item is strictly supervised with quality control at every stage in the workroom. Extremely skilled craftspeople carry out all the manufacturing procedures, the team of people have been working on Cedes Milano’s behalf for years, developing their mastery increasingly.
All of the materials selected for their products are completely natural, come from their countries of origin, and comply with veterinary and environmental regulations. This process respects the important Washington convention on international commerce of endangered wildlife and plants (C.I.T.E.S).
Essential to each design is choosing the right material for that product, especially so when working with leather. A wallet requires light and soft to-the-touch leather, a case cover needs a compact and smooth material, a bag demands elastic yet solid leather. Colours, finishing and tanning provide a wide range of materials with different characteristics. Cedes Milano offer a wide selection of full-grain lambskin, Saffiano goatskin, embossed calfskin, ostrich leather, and pigskin to produce a complete range of accessories. They mainly use vegetable tanning across the leather range, as this process helps preserve natural characteristics.
Another of Cedes Milano’s main material choices is mother of pearl, whose beauty and perfection have been revered for centuries. An extremely refined decoration for precious objects, the Cedes Milano craftsmen select two main varieties of mother of pearl: Pinctada maxima, white with green, silver or golden shades, coming especially from Australia and the Southern Seas, and Pinctada margaritifera, from the Fiji Islands and Tahiti, with different shades.
All of the designs from Cedes Milano are produced using natural materials and are 100% handmade at their Milanese workshop. Their philosophy of using the finest materials and very best crafts-people to create their designs ensures that all of their products are of the truest luxury. With a large celebrity fan base, including Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow who featured the brand in her 2015 Christmas Gift Guide, it’s easy to see why their products are so popular. Timelessly elegant and impeccably crafted, Cedes Milano have created heirlooms for the future.
