You might not have even gone on your summer holiday yet, but in the interiors world we’ve officially reached that time of year when the authorities in the industry are looking to the fast approaching year ahead and start making their predictions on what will be the next big things. Kicking off the predictions is Dulux with their naming of the colour of the year, which was announced today as Tranquil Dawn. Let’s get up close and personal with the Dulux Colour of the Year 2020...
Selected by an expert panel of color designers, trend forecasters, design specialists, architects and editors from around the world, the Dulux Color of the Year is now in its 17th year. The panel also included former Editor in Chief of Elle Decoration UK, Michelle Ogundehin, and was chaired by Heleen van Gent from AkzoNobel’s Global Aesthetic center. Together they identified the world’s overwhelming desire for reconnection.
The soft green hue was chosen to embody the nation’s mood as we approach a brand new decade. It reflects our growing desire to understand what it means to be human at a time when technological advances risk us being left behind and becoming increasingly disconnected from each other. Mass production, digitization, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are all a key part of our world, and in many ways have improved our lives. However the lack of human connection at times makes quality of life poorer. More chaotic. Heleen van Gent explains:
Against a background of increasing technological power, we want to understand our place in society and how we can make a positive impact on it. We need a fresh purpose, to be the architects of our own future and we are asking searching questions of both ourselves and society.
Tranquil Dawn offers ‘a human touch’ for our lives and our homes and Dulux has also created four supporting trend palettes to capture how the hue can be used to create the spaces we want and need in the year ahead.
A new decade heralds a new dawn and the hazy pale green tones of Tranquil Dawn™ are calming and comforting just when we need it most in our lives. When paired with neutral pastels and rich jewels it becomes incredibly powerful at creating spaces that encourage making better human connections.
The colors within all palettes including Tranquil Dawn™ have been inspired by the changing sunrises that paint the sky in different seasons and have been designed to make decoration with Color of the Year simple. Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director Dulux UK.
