At Home With Christopher Kane

9/11/2021

Founded by brother and sister Christopher and Tammy Kane, Christopher Kane is the London label challenging fashion ideologies and notions of beauty since 2006. The Scottish-born designer sat down with us to talk about home style, Christmas traditions, and what 2022 has in store for him.

Describe your interior style in three words.

Unintentional, chaos, and me.

Which room in your home is your favourite?

My basement, it’s where I spend most of my time. We cook, socialize, and occasionally throw parties.

What’s your home’s colour palette?

I would say it’s predominantly monochrome but with lots of colour thrown in via textiles and art.

What was the last thing you bought for your home?

A washing line, it’s a necessity!

What’s your most treasured possession in your home?

I would have to choose my TV, it’s a form of escapism which I find relaxing.

What was your biggest interior design mistake?

Painting a wall with outdoor paint was one. While I like it, the texture reminds me of sand.

How would you describe your Christmas decor style?

In my home, I am surprisingly very minimal during the holidays. I love lots of flowers and wild foliage - there’s nothing better than walking into the house and smelling eucalyptus. When I’m helping Tammy (my sister), I’m more extravagant with decorating.

Dress up or stay in loungewear on Christmas Day?

Both. I start the day relaxed, then dress for dinner and then retire back to loungewear post dinner.

What does a typical Christmas look like for you?

Up until the Pandemic, I had never missed a Christmas with my sister Tammy and my nieces. This was the first one and I do have to say that in a way I loved it (though it was a lot quieter) but there was something really lovely and special about just spending it with my partner Mao and Bruce our dog. It was a lot slower paced and extremely relaxed. Rather than cook, we got a Claridge’s Christmas home meal delivered - it was so delicious and there were no dishes to wash up! Christmas is always about being with family for me, so usually we do a huge family dinner with all the trimmings imaginable. The kids have me up from 7am, dragging me downstairs to watch them open their gifts, their faces full of wonder. The best bits are the simple bits: a big family dinner, relaxing together, and taking the dog for a walk on Hampstead Heath.

Do you have any Christmas traditions?

I have quite a few. The first thing that kicks off the Christmas season is Skate at Somerset House, followed by tree decoration shopping at Fortnum & Mason. Closer to Christmas we take the kids to see the lights on Regent Street, then finish with an afternoon tea at Claridge’s.

What’s your favourite Christmas memory?

My favourite things are the simple things – surrounded by family and the dogs, eating lots of food and enjoying some drinks followed by an evening in front of the TV watching iconic Christmas films.
