Project name: Family home near Guildford in Surrey
Floor Area: 1200sq ft
Project time taken: 9 months
Completion of Project: ongoing but phase One completed in October 2016
Having completed their chalet In Crans Montana, the family of this private country house approached me to re-design their English home, to create a better and more harmonious living space for them and their four children.
What was the creation / planning process?
There are three starting points for every project: the location, the building and above all, the client. Ultimately the inspiration behind every project comes from the client. It is essential to draw inspiration from the client in order to arrive at a design that feels truly personal to them and this project was no exception.
Where once the rooms had been dark, we re-configured them, and opened up the spaces to bring the light and the views of the garden in from all around. Each room was given a distinct function and layered with fabrics, textures and the client’s private art collection to give comfort and personality to their home.
How did the project go?
The project went well and the transition from brief to completion was very smooth. I am lucky to have a talented and organised team with good systems in place at Nicky Dobree Interior Design that enabled us to deliver on time and achieve the best design solutions possible. Having a good brief from the client was a great help too.
What was your favourite room or part of the project and why?
I love the kitchen area. Where once the kitchen was a poky corridor, tucked down a back alley it now takes centre stage overlooking the garden all around. It is the social hub of the home and when the doors are open in the summer everyone spills out on to the terrace and the garden beyond.
Were there any issues or problems you encountered during the project?
I can honestly say that I was lucky and that there were none. Compared with building and installing in the Alps this was a dream!
