Ian Stallings is an artist at heart, and has over a decade of experience in the interior design sector. His San Francisco-based firm, Ian Stallings Design, specialises in high-end full service projects. Amongst his many finished projects he has worked across some of the finest homes in San Francisco, London, New York and a furniture gallery and showroom in China. Each of these successful projects share one thing in common: Ian Stallings’ deep commitment to the client’s needs, desires, experiences, and aspirations.
‘An artist at heart, I see each client as a muse and their space as a canvas. Combining my knowledge in architecture, interior decoration, and contemporary art, I don’t “decorate” a home. Instead, I build a meaningful, profound, and long lasting relationship with the client while giving style a newfound substance.’
Ian shares one of his favourite interior design projects with The LuxPad below…
Project Name: Nelson
Floor Area: 800 sqft
Project Time Taken: 6 months
A young, energetic female executive had a little condo she wanted to make sexy. The space was a jewel, just like her. The client’s laugh and energy are like wildfire, yet she maintains a deep introspective insight into life. A fresh coat of paint throughout, a small remodel in the kitchen, a curated art collection, and custom storage, and fresh furniture and drapery had her bouncing off the stars with joy. To this day, we are still close friends. Clients like her are my favourite. We had three meetings: the first when we toured the project and spent two or so hours together so that I could get a feeling for her personality and style; the second when I presented the proposed design that she approved; the third when she returned five months later to her finished home.
Creation / planning process
I met with the young female executive who was to become my client. She knew what she wanted and knew how to let go and have a design professional do what needed to be done to achieve the perfect home for her. I took notes about specific design-related questions like what colours she preferred, but mostly I wanted to know where she was from, where she had lived and travelled, her favourite movies and music, and how she liked to spend her time off. From this I knew what I needed to do for her. A month later we met for the second time. I gave her two design options. She picked one, with two simple alternations, and then the behind the scenes production ensued for the main installation.
How it went?
Everything went smoothly for the most part. There are always things that come up along the way in the process that are stressful but that is just life. We don’t live in a perfect world. However, we stayed on course and on point to deliver the project on time.
Favourite room / part of the project and why?
I love that she let me take the bay window space in the front of her condo and turn it into a little lounge where she can sit with friends while having cocktail parties, curl up with a book, stare off to watch the fog roll in, or take a cat nap in the sun.
Any issues / problems you had to overcome during the project?
There was nothing of note, or out of the ordinary.
