The Claridge’s hotel in London’s Mayfair has an esteemed history steeped in glamour and luxury, and Diane Von Furstenberg was keen to uphold this trend when she re-designed several rooms and a suite for them. A key part of London’s history this magnificent hotel has seen stars, socialites and the crowned heads of Europe enjoy it for over 100 years.
This is the first foray into large scale interior design for Diane Von Furstenberg who is world renowned for her use of vividly bold colours & iconic signature wrap dresses. A long-time guest and friend of the five star establishment she calls ‘the most glamorous hotel in the world’ first staying there as a young independent businesswomen, she now regards it as a home away from home.
“For more than a century, Claridge’s has stood as an emblem of timeless glamour,” says Stephen Alden, CEO of the Maybourne Hotel Group.
“Our collaboration with the talented Diane von Furstenberg is the latest storyline within our history of forward-thinking design.”
Claridge’s is known for its Art Deco heritage which began back in the 1920s when designers such as Basil Ionides and Oswald Milne created the restaurant and main entrance of the hotel. DVF has successfully retained the elegance and refined sense associated with Art Deco whilst injecting her iconic colours and patterns, breathing new life into a series of rooms, junior suites and the third floor Piano Suite.
Creating bespoke fabrics & furniture and bringing her iconic prints and bold colour she has kept the best original features of this very English hotel. She explained
“I wanted to respect the architecture and the formality of the grand hotel room, but at the same time make it relevant to today’s lifestyle.”
With lots of classic monochrome styling interjected with bright & vibrant colour palettes and clashing patterns each room is bursting with a bold yet sophisticated personality. Using many different styles and textures including ikat, cashmere blankets, Murano crystals, chocolate hues and her own photographs taken during her travels, she has stamped the rooms with a distinct, yet comfortably luxurious, feel. Elegant and stylish, like her high end fashion lines, every room features beautiful details such as writing desks and chests of drawers that look like vintage travelling trunks.
June saw the official opening celebrated with a Jazz era themed evening in the Mayfair hotel’s ballroom. Guest included Victoria Beckham & Gwyneth Paltrow and the night was a glamorous success emulating the elegance of this legendary designer and her beautifully opulent interior design style. Book into the Piano Suite to experience the luxury DVF style, perfect for a home away from home, ideal for fashionable city living.
