Founded by wine lovers, for wine lovers, 67 Pall Mall is one of London’s best kept secrets. A private members club, the extensive building and sub-basement cellars hold over 4,000 wines and the club was formed from a passion for fine wine and a frustration at the egregious mark-ups on the capital’s wine lists. An escape from the cacophony of the city outside, 67 Pall Mall is not only a mecca for exceptional wines but also a haven of luxury design and is filled with room upon room of sumptuous panelling, furnishings and accessories.
Located in the Hambros’ former banking hall the main space is the Members’ Lounge with its large south facing windows and picturesque views of St James’s Palace. In this space members can enjoy an unrivalled selection of wines by the glass and by the bottle and the bespoke iPad wine list is updated with critic’s scores, winemakers’ notes and tasting notes. The plush lounge is filled with an assortment of wing backed chairs, arm chairs and benches in shades of teal and green to stylishly contrast with the caramel coloured panelling and over 500 wines are available by the glass to tempt members to sample new and unusual varieties.
To the rear of the Member’s Lounge is the Wine Library which displays thousands of bottles of the Club’s collection, where members are encouraged to browse and select new bottles to enjoy. These bottles are stored at the optimum temperature and humidity in bespoke cabinets and a team of sommeliers host informal tastings here or are on hand to offer expert advice. Topping the main area is the Mezzanine which is a quieter area away from the hubbub of the Lounge and is the perfect place to spend an hour reclining on one of the comfy chairs, flicking through one of the Club’s extensive collection of wine books.
Upstairs is the newly opened Club Room designed by Russell Sage which is home to a further 400 wines by the glass. Filled with numerous nooks for an intimate tête-à-tête, one of these small corners has been humorously named ‘the Naughty Corner’ which is a small spirit bar with deep colours, opulent furnishings and suggestive artwork to set it apart from the rest of the areas. Also available on the Club Room level is a sharing menu crafted by the club’s head chef Marcus Verberne.
The final spaces on offer at 67 Pall Mall are the expansive cellars housing the club’s reserve facility. These state of the art wine cellars span most of the club’s sub-basements and feature a bespoke air handling system to maintain the temperature between 13-14°C and 65-70% humidity. The cellars also offer a member reserve facility where members can store some of the personal collections to enjoy whilst visiting, as the club’s original members in the 1800s did.
The innermost sanctum of the cellar is the Chatwood ‘invincible’ Strongroom which stores the finest and rarest wines in the collection. Built in 1934 for Hambros Bank, this space was originally a vault which has now been carefully refurbished as the most secure facility for the storage of fine wine in London.
67 Pall Mall is one of London’s best private members club and membership fees start from £500 with a £1500 joining fee. All applicants require a proposer and seconder from within the existing membership and you can find out more about becoming a member of this exclusive club on the 67 Pall Mall website.
