New York based interior designer, Mikel Welch, works extensively in the industry both on and off camera. Currently the host and design expert on Quibi’s Murder House Flip, he is also part of the 2020 AMARA Interior Blog Awards judging panel. We’ve asked him some important questions…

How does it feel to be an IBA judge this year?

I am beyond excited to participate this year. This is such a huge honor to review the talents of such well-regarded industry professionals.

What are you most looking forward to about this year’s campaign?

I’m looking forward to seeing all of the talent on the “other side of the pond.” I’ve always been enthralled with the UK and the endless amount of design inspiration that comes from this country. I can’t wait to see how these amazing bloggers capture the true essence of design with words.

What are the key elements you’ll be looking for in this year’s blogs?

Content is always King in my book! I will be looking for relevant and meaningful content. It’s so easy to rehash an old article and put a spin on it. I can’t wait to see some fresh and thought provoking content that is so needed in this industry.

Can you tell us your top tips for bringing interest to neutral colour schemes?

When dealing with neutrals, you must understand the art of layering. Neutrals can really boring if they are flat. It’s the layering of pieces that help curate a story. Another key to working with neutrals is your selection of art work. An iconic moment on the wall can go a long way. If you have striking accessories with character, they can instantly liven up a neutral space.

What has been your favourite Murder House Flip project and what was the story behind it?

My favorite episode was the finale. We were working on the Barsi house, where a childhood actress was unfortunately murdered by her father. This house was important because the family who moved into the home, had no idea of the tragedy that took place. They were so emotionally affected by the disaster and trauma and were unable to sell their home. This was one of the first times I was able to use design as a method of therapy. I really got to see how design can be used to change someone’s life.

What is your top tip for those just starting out in the interior industry?

The most important thing is to have your business in order. Design is only 30% of the job, the rest is all project management and business. If you don’t have a good handle on the business side of things, your design business will be full of pretty photo images and an empty bank account.

Do you think what’s happened in the world this year will have an impact on future interior design?

Absolutely, I think Furniture makers will begin to take on new processes.. I believe manufacturers are now going to have to consider more commercial grade materials that can withstand abrasive cleaners. I also think there will be an influx in singular seating options as opposed to larger clustered seating arrangements.

What is your favourite room in the home to design and why?

My favorite room to design is typically our living room. I feel like this is the one area where the entire family often congregate. It is generally the largest room in the home so you have a lot of flexibility in terms of the fun furniture floorplans that you can come up with. Give me a living room hands down!

If you could design anyone’s interior in the past or present whose would it be?

If I could design a home for anyone in the world, it would have to be Oprah Winfrey. She is such a powerful woman and has a great pulse on life. I would love to just be in her presence.

What would you do on your perfect day off?

A perfect day off for me would be a trip to the Soho House where I would indulge in a spa service and poolside cocktails!
