Design for Diversity

Design for Diversity is an initiative launched on 18th June 2020, by Kate Watson Smyth & Rukmini Patel. A three-point Pledge covering Visibility, Opportunity and Accessibility, it is a first step to working towards a more diverse design industry and giving brands, businesses and bloggers a guideline on areas they can work on to make themselves, and the interiors industry as a whole, more inclusive. It consists of three simple statements about increasing diversity on social media and websites, an undertaking to seek out more candidates from all backgrounds for job vacancies (while stopping short of quotas and rejecting tokenism) and a promise to make panels and events more representative. Taking the pledge means you agree to work on those areas within your business (where applicable; those who work alone and don't hire staff won't be affected by that point for example) as well as placing a sign that you are open to approaches from everyone whether it's someone seeking work experience or wishing to present their products for stock. Anyone can place the sticker on their site but it's a public promise and you can be called out for failing to uphold what it stands for.


By placing the Design For Diversity sticker on our website, we undertake to uphold the following:

1 Visibility We pledge that our channels – our websites, blogs and social media – will at all times endeavour to include people of every colour and gender and sexuality.

2 Opportunity We pledge to seek out Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates to interview for roles that arise in our businesses. We will always hire the best person for the job, but we will endeavour to bring more diverse candidates through the process. We stop short of positive discrimination and we reject tokenism.

3 Accessibility We pledge that any events we hold – be they panel discussions or talks, dinners, receptions, or media events – will endeavour to include people of all colours and genders.
