With America’s Labor Day just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the very best of great American design. Home to some of the world’s most iconic labels as well as up-and-coming designers, we explore the history of some of our favourite American brands.

Founded in 1967, Ralph Lauren is now one of the most distinctive names in the world of design. Retaining the same sense of homegrown, American authenticity as the beginning, Ralph Lauren Home now offers a classic collection of bed linen, home accessories, table linen and more all boasting a contemporary feel with a nostalgic edge through little touches including the American flag and famed Ralph Lauren insignia.

Continuing to resist the pressure to outsource production, each piece is hand-crafted one-by-one by skilled artisans from their New York-based studio.

New York-based potter, designer, and author; Jonathan Adler is on a mission to spread modern American glamour across the globe. In 1993, Barneys bought a collection of Adler’s ceramic pots, which led to him opening his first store. Today, Jonathan Adler’s offerings span across furniture, lighting, and home decor, along with countless iconic interior projects and over 25 stores around the globe. Each piece is rooted in his commitment to outstanding design, impeccable materials, and unparalleled craftsmanship.

Established in 1863 by young English weaver Thomas Kay, Pendelton was born from a vision of raising his own sheep and producing his own wool in America. A six-generation strong company that is still family-run and deeply connected to the Native American community, Pendleton is recognised across the globe for crafting durable wool blankets, throws, and towels inspired by indigenous culture using traditional Native American techniques.

Originally founded in 1989 by American fashion designer Donna Karan, DKNY is one of the most iconic names in fashion. Inspired by the energy and spirit of New York, the brand offers a luxury collection of bedding, soft furnishings and home accessories that are synonymous with elegance and uncompromised sexuality.

Sean McNanny is a Brooklyn-based artist, designer, and founder of Saved New York. A former designer for Ralph Lauren Home, Sean created his first collection of luxury blankets in 2015. Since then, the eponymous label has grown exponentially and offers an expansive range of cashmere furnishings. Combining influences from nomadic culture, Victorian ephemera, and French ironwork, Saved New York’s collection is a unique marriage of traditional craftsmanship and modern sensibility.
