The History of the Stocking
Stockings have been part of Christmas for generations, but where did it all begin? Whilst there’s no written record of the origin of the Christmas stocking, there are plenty of theories...
One folklore tells the tale of a widowed nobleman struggling to raise his three daughters and afford their dowries. Upon hearing of the widower's woes, kindly Saint Nick visits the family home and throws three bags filled with gold coins down the chimney and each one fell straight into the girls’ stockings hanging by the fireplace to dry. News soon travelled amongst the locals and children began hanging their stockings by the fireplaces on Christmas Eve in the hopes of receiving presents from Saint Nicholas.
In the earliest days, children would use their own socks as a receptacle for Santa’s gifts. As time went on people began using larger, longer socks to hold more gifts (a bigger stocking meant more gifts!). A simple orange is one of the most traditional gifts in a stocking. Said to have begun during the Great Depression when families struggled to buy gifts, others say an orange represents the gold Saint Nick gifted in the tale. And not forgetting the dreaded lump of coal, something found in the bottom of the stocking of a child who may have misbehaved throughout the year. Today many use boot-sized stockings labelled for each member of the family and filled to the brim with toys, sweets and small gifts.
