How to Create Your Own Garden Room

No outside space? No problem. One of this year’s biggest interior trends is plants. And we don’t mean a single monstera in the living room and a cactus in the kitchen. We mean a plethora of plants, creating your own indoor jungle of fabulous foliage to truly bring the outdoors in. Just because you don’t have a garden it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the great outdoors this spring…

Hanging plants are a fabulous way to bring greenery into a small space. Working particularly well in interiors with high ceilings, vertical plants free up valuable floor space and turn even the simplest of settings into something fabulous. Have fun with your hanging plants, build an indoor trellis and hang a variety of small plants to create a statement feature wall, attach vertical planters to the wall to bring texture to your space, or if you’re blessed with high ceilings, hang a variety of baskets at different levels to create your very own green art installation on your ceiling.

Consider each individual plant you choose and the light it requires to thrive. If your room is particularly dark, opt for low-light houseplants. Our favorites include the Instagram-worthy monstera, with its luscious tropical cut-out leaves, and the beautiful calathea; a low-light loving plant with tonal green leaves featuring surprising purple undersides. Both of these plants can grow fairly tall and wide, so they make excellent floor plants. Looking for something for your tabletop? Spider Plants are a fabulous option thanks to their winding leaves in multi-tonal greens and their ability to grow happily in low-level lighting.

When it comes to creating your own garden room, the size and type of plants you choose really matters. Place your plants at different heights in a room so the trailing plants hang down and the floor plants reach upwards, and introduce as many plant species as you can (keeping in mind their light requirements) so there’s a mixture of texture and color. And don’t forget about the pots and planters, they’re almost as important as the plants they house. Mix colors, textures and styles to create a rustic jungle vibe, or keep to sleek, modern shapes if you’re after more of a contemporary look.

Keep the green theme going beyond the plants by embracing the color on your walls and soft furnishings. We love sage for its calming properties, but any shade of green will work. As the color of life, renewal and nature, introducing this fresh hue will encourage you to pause and enjoy the moment, so complement your private secret garden with pillows, throws and accessories in your favorite shade.

Not gifted with green fingers? It doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy the beauty of houseplants. Artificial plants have come a long way in recent years, with some fooling even the most eagle-eyed of gardeners. Adopt the same tips we’ve outlined above, playing with depth, color and space and you can create your own artificial haven. Once you’re feeling brave, you can even mix real and faux foliage by introducing some of the hardier houseplants such as succulents, snake plants and calathea plants.
