Designer Focus – Orla Kiely
Orla Kiely is a world renowned Irish designer synonymous with graphic prints and kitsch patterns. Now resident in London she moved from Ireland to pursue a career in design and her first job was as a print designer for Esprit. She then completed an MA at the Royal College of Arts to gain a greater knowledge of the fashion industry.
After graduating she went on to work for Club Monaco, now owned by Ralph Lauren, whilst there she started working on her own business at the weekends. First commissioned by Harrods in 1993 for a range of accessories, Orla Kiely’s label was born and quickly developed into an expanding collection of everything from fashion to home accessories.
She has been nominated for Best Accessory Designer in the British Style Awards, and won the Irish Tatler Woman of the Year award. All of her designs are influenced by the 60’s and 70’s, she says;
‘we always make our designs clean and modern and we are all about colour, we’re about taking something from the past and moving it forward”.
Orla Kiely stationery, home fragrances, and a selection of mugs are available now at Amara.
