Experience the beauty of Capri with the island inspired home fragrances from Carthusia. Legend has it that the first Carthusia fragrance was created by the prior of the Carthusian Monastery of St Giacomo. Caught unaware by the arrival of Queen Giovanna d’Angiò to the island he created a flower arrangement using only the most beautiful flowers on the island. After three days the prior noticed the water, which had not been changed, had acquired a fragrance he had never experienced before. He went to the father alchemist who traced the origin of the scent back to ‘Garofilum silvestre caprese’, and so the very first Capri fragrance was born.
The history of brand tells us however that it was in 1948 that the prior of the Monastery discovered the old formulas of the perfumers and, with the Pope’s permission, revealed them to a chemist from Turin, who created the smallest laboratory in the world and called it Carthusia.
Today the tradition is continued, and the limited production means Carthusia is able to use the same methods as the monks once did.
