SL9 Site Montage, Different Wavelengths

From the Keck Telescope

W.M. Keck Telescope Multi-Wavelength pictures of comet impact sites (on picture, left to right: C, A, E, H, G) taken on 19 July 1994, 8:45 UT. The seven images show Jupiter at infrared wavelengths from 1.23 to 3.5 microns (as listed in the lower right panel). Each wavelength probes into the atmosphere to a different depth and reveals how the comet fragments have affected the atmosphere at different altitudes. These pictures reveal that the impacts have caused the greatest disturbance at high altitudes. Photo Credit: W.M. Keck Observatory/Imke de Pater, James Graham, Garrett Jernigan (all UC Berkeley)
