Tenerife Tales
Pictures can say a thousand words.
Duende: ghost, evil spirit, inspiration, magic, fire. The duende is not in the throat; the duende climbs up inside you, from the soles of the feet. The duende, then, is a power, not a work; a struggle, not a thought. This little girl's yearning at the waterside in Puerto de la Cruz has gone beyond wishing and into the realm of el duende. Date: September 2001.
What is it about Tenerife and little dogs? Large dogs are almost nonexistent on this island; little dogs rule. Here this representative of the Little Dog species is expressing his indignation about my intrusion on his street. Date: September 2001.
On a hot September 11, I was bicyling my way past fields of banana trees when I stopped to have a drink. A few moments later, a fellow drove his truck up to me, hopped out, and began cleaning the telephone booth. Date: September 2001.
A Tamaimo retaurant, on the way to the insanely twisted roads of Masca. Note the 'Se Vende' sign in the window. Date: September 2001.
Scuba diver caught in a nuclear flash? Date: September 2001.
This Puerto de la Cruz fisherman has a remarkable face. Date: September 2001.
