Color 'Scapes
I prefer practicing black and white photography, but there are some effects that I can only get in color...
I took this photo on the first day of the decade: January 1, 1980 at Newport Beach, California. I used a blue-sensitive film (Ektachrome), and no filters, and this sunset still looked like it was on fire! I entered this photo in a college photography contest in 1983, and it placed in the top 100, out of 10,000 entries. Date: January 1, 1980.
Early morning is not my best time (I'm a late-night person), but I was up early walking along the Newport Beach pier on this particular occasion when I snapped this picture. The morning light was perfect (and my star filter helped too!). Date: Spring 1982.
I took this photo during a bicycle trip through the Colorado Rocky Mountains in 1988. I love bicycling mountains, but they are always tough for me, so I frequently stop to rest and pretend that I'm taking beautiful photographs... Date: August 1988.
This scene was located in another part of the world in southern Estonia, near the Latvian border. Many people there, while poor by Western standards, managed to buy country houses in addition to their city dwelling; these rural hideaways provide a peaceful rest. I took this photo while taking a walk from my cousin's country house in July 1991, one month before the Soviet Union fell. Date: July 1991.
