Bits of American Icons

Multi-meaning symbols of present and past Americana.

Sharkeys Growing up in America, it's easy to be sheltered from folklore and icons of America's past and present because the country's enormous size can hold many less-visible pockets. I spent my childhood in Hawaii, and only experienced the western motif while watching movies. In my early adult years and later, the western motif and old ghost towns were a novelty to me, and utterly charming. This present-day scene is full of symbolic meaning of American values. This photo was taken during a southerly drive down California's spine on the way to Death Valley. Date: March 1994.

Sierra Nevadas Log Cabin Compared to European history, America's western pioneers lived recently; their traces are easily found scattered through the west. This log cabin was tucked away in a remote part of the Sierra Nevada mountains near Mammoth Lakes. My young backpacking buddies and I chanced upon it while hiking. Date: July 1978.
