Never for one moment did I imagine I would embark on a career in e-commerce but eight years in, Amara continues to go from strength to strength. After a career as Head of Equity Trading at a large US investment bank & twenty years in the financial services industry, I felt a break was needed and departed on a ‘gap year’ in 2003 at the age of 40. Upon returning & whilst deciding what to do next, my wife Sam project managed a complete refurbishment of our family home, which sparked the inspiration to create a luxury interior design company. Motivated by Sam’s design talent & keen eye for future trends, I quickly realised Amara’s potential to blossom into a high-end homeware company, with an emphasis on outstanding customer service to remain ahead of other online retailers.
I fully believe that the key driving force behind any prosperous business is the people that work there and that without a strong staff behind it, a company cannot meet its true potential. After managing a team of fifty in my last role, I was able to apply this experience to Amara from the beginning to assemble a team of first class individuals that were all prepared to go the extra mile to be successful. This team continues to grow and is what differentiates Amara from the competition. When first established, everyone at Amara joined forces to complete the day to day tasks, but having grown quickly in the last few years and recruiting more & more key members of staff, I now have much more opportunity to utilise to strategic skills to manage a 100% growth per annum with reasonable comfort.
I couldn’t possibly choose just one favourite Amara moment but have finally settled on two events that continue to stand out in my mind. The first, an eventful day in December 2012 amidst the Christmas rush, when the entire team picked, packed & dispatched 555 orders with the Airfill machine broken for most of the day, which as you can imagine was no easy task. The second is also from December 2012 and was the first Amara Christmas Jumper Day, which involved prizes for the best jumper & ended with a night of karaoke! The event was such a success and a much needed break for the staff from the busy Christmas period that it will now be an annual occasion.
